Red Crossbills are a nomadic species, flying to areas with the best available food sources.

Red Crossbills can breed any time they locate a large enough cone crop, the mainstay of their diet, even in winter. Using their uniquely shaped bill, they readily remove conifer seeds to eat and feed their young. Photos & video taken 4/28/11 by Craig Johnson
